There should be a law against individual people using golf-sized umbrellas when walking on the side-walks in NYC. I continually get poked by people carelessly carrying their ultra-large umbrella – whereas a normal-sized umbrella would still keep them dry and permit more people to walk on the sidewalk (especially during rush hour) without getting injured or having to continuously dodge the careless umbrella users.

I so agree.
I like having a large umbrella and i plan to keep using it. The issue is nobody want to hold the umbrella correctly. If you rest it on you shoulder and walk while pushing your stroller and talking on your cell phone then you will poke others. If you hold it in you hand and move it up then nobody gets poked. A good poke once in a while is maybe what you need.
